Nestled in Hefferman Gulch along the babbling South Chicago Creek and surrounded by pristine National Forest, this “Cabin in the Woods” as part of the Recreational Residence Program offers peaceful solitude, rich history, and rustic charm in an idyllic setting just outside of the gateway to the rockies town of Idaho Springs Colorado not far from the Highway 103 Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway
The cabin is being sold furnished and user ready with interior and exterior furniture, wood burning fireplace, wood heating stove and camp comforts for your mountain getaway.
Inside you’ll find a “camper kitchen” area with cabinets, butcher-block counters and sink basin along with portable burner and grill equipment
The cabin has a 10’x10’6″ partitioned bedroom curtained from the living area and a spiral stairway rises to a sleeping loft with skylights bringing natural light to the spaces
The bathroom hosts a composting toilet and primitive shower. Water is manually brought to the cabin and a small low voltage pump is run by battery or solar panels on the roof.
The cabin is a part of the Forest Service Recreational Cabin Program where the land is leased from the federal government usually in 20 or 30 year increments. The owner owns the improvements and the rights to access and use the land. The current lease is through 2028 ($1,353/year lease fee + $1,200 transfer fee) when it is expected to renew for the next 20 or 30 year increment. The cabin is strategically situated within the Arapaho National Forest close to the secluded South Chicago Creek trailhead of a beautiful 4.7 mile out-and-back hike in the Mount Evans Wilderness climbing to a stunning overlook of a mountain cirque, surrounding peaks and alpine lakes . Many other outstanding hikes and excursions are nearby such as the Mt. Blue Sky Scenic Byway which leads to the highest paved road in North America reaching 14,266′; or extensive historic adventures, mining tours, and experiences in or near Idaho Springs, Georgetown, and Evergreen. The cabin is centrally situated within GMU 39 for Elk & Deer.
